The Explorer’s program is a division of the Holmdel First Aid Squad that allow high school students to give back to the community. The explorers contribute to the Holmdel First Aid Squad in many ways, from participating in community events and fundraisers to serving as certified EMTs on First Aid Squad ambulances and helping people in medical emergencies.

To become an explorer, you must be at least 15 years of age. In order to ride on an ambulance, explorers must take an initial CPR class for health care professions. After taking this class, explorers may ride on ambulances but are restricted in what care they can provide. After taking a CPR class, explorers may take a class to become a certified EMT. These classes are offered throughout the year and are time intensive. After gaining certification, explorers may ride on ambulances and provide the same services as an adult EMT. Becoming an EMT requires a commitment in time, both in taking certification classes and in going on “calls.” The rewards, however, are also great. Explorers learn how to work as a team with adult EMTs and other health care professionals, receive a first hand look at our health care system, and provide an invaluable service to the community.

There are currently 30 Explorers, over half of which are fully certified EMT’s that ride on night and day crews alongside adult EMT’s to 911 calls. Everyday of the week is covered by an Explorer ready to help. All current 18 year old Explorers have pledged to ride all night, which means sacrificing sleep on a school night to serve on the First Aid Squad if there is a medical emergency.

We are a very dedicated and motivated group of high school students and we always welcome anybody who is also passionate about helping others. If you are 15 or older, please come to our bimonthly meetings to find out more about what we do.
